Preparing the mountain scene
  1. Beyond coverage

Mert and Emre hike beyond mobile coverage. Even without an internet connection, nearby phones have another way to communicate.

    No internet. A friend nearby.

  2. On the same slope

The hikers are at nearby points on the same slope. Compatible phones with Bluetooth enabled can connect directly. Rocks, terrain and devices affect the range.

A connection between two nearby phones.

  3. A direct message

Once connected, Mert’s message travels directly to Emre’s phone. This nearby exchange needs no mobile data, Wi-Fi network or cell tower.

“I’m fine. I stopped here for a short break.”

  4. Share your location

If the phone can obtain location data, it can share it over the connection. A location can accompany “I’m waiting here.” Its age and accuracy matter.

“I sent my location. I’m waiting here.”

  5. Continue together

A short check-in helps agree on a break or meeting point. Before leaving, add contacts by QR, enable permissions and make sure both phones have enough battery.

“Got your message. Let’s meet there.”

Both people need a compatible app, Bluetooth enabled, required permissions and enough battery. Device and platform support may differ.

Illustrative scenario; the points are not a real route or a range measurement. Connectivity depends on terrain and devices; location data may be missing or stale.
